3D (Tomosynthesis Mammography)

The Center For Medical Imaging provides state of the art mammography at their Tanasbourne and Bridgeport locations.

CMI provides digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D Mammography, which produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast detail, significantly improving early breast cancer detection and reducing the need for follow-up imaging by up to 40%.

Center For Medical Imaging schedules same-day and next-day appointments with results sent immediately to the clinician after the exam is finalized.

What is 3D Mammography?

A 3D mammogram is a new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection. During the 3D part of the exam an X-ray beam sweeps through the breast in a slight arc and takes pictures of multiple “slices” of breast tissues. This technology is particularly effective when screening women who have dense breast tissue. A 3D mammogram complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time. No additional compression is required.

Mammography plays a vital role in the early detection of breast cancer, and can often detect a lump in the breast before it can be felt. Annual mammograms are recommended by the American Cancer Society for women who are 40 or more years of age, or women at high-risk for breast cancer, including those with a family history.

Preparing for a Mammogram

Patients scheduled for a mammogram at CMI should not wear any deodorant on the day of the exam and wash to remove any talc or powder deodorants prior to the Mammogram to avoid artifacts that mimic breast disease. Wear comfortable and loose-fitting two-piece clothing without metal such as snaps, zippers or belt buckles that can reduce image quality. Limit metal jewelry for the same reasons. Patients who may be pregnant should inform the Technologist prior to the exam.

It is very important that you share where your previous breast imaging exams were performed. If your previous breast imaging exams were performed outside of the Portland area we will need a signed release to procure these records for comparison.

During a 3D Mammogram

The process is the same as a conventional 2D mammogram. The technologist will position your breast between two plates, compress your breast and an X-ray beam sweeps through the breast in a slight arc and takes images from different angles. No additional compression required.

After a 3D Mammogram

Once an exam in complete, the detailed images of the breast tissue will be reviewed by a CMI Radiologist. A report generated by the Radiologist will be forwarded to the patient’s physician.
